Pakistan’s NED university developing first-ever AI-powered car

Karachi’s NED University of Engineering and Technology has made history by developing Pakistan’s first fully autonomous vehicle. The National Centre for Artificial Intelligence at the university has seized this massive undertaking in an effort to materialize cutting-edge technology for automated vehicles.

To pull it off, the group brought in an EV tailored to their needs from China, which they are currently enhancing with state-of-the-art AI software. If all goes as planned, the group plans to test an AI-driven car on a university campus for the first time within six months.

Significant advancements have been achieved in creating real-time vehicle control systems, refining data processing, and enhancing fundamental software features, according to Dr. Muhammad Khurram, the project director. Additionally, research students such as Aleema and Inzamam play an important role by merging mapping, robotics, and artificial intelligence. Among their discoveries are algorithms that have been proven in simulations to effectively monitor speed, detect objects, and recognize lanes.

The team is currently working on improving the car’s steering control and traffic signal recognition so it can handle real-life driving situations. Once completed, this project has the potential to significantly transform the country’s technological capabilities.

The National Centre for Artificial Intelligence is one of nine research institutions set up by the federal government of Pakistan to encourage innovation and development in the country’s technology sector; this program is a component of that broader endeavor. The autonomous vehicle research at NED University has the potential to bring a new age to Pakistan’s transportation industry by fusing local creativity with international technology.
