Russia announces it has established contact with Syria’s new authorities

Russia has confirmed that it has established contact with Syria’s new authorities following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Damascus on Sunday.

Mikhail Bogdanov, Russia’s special envoy for the Middle East and North Africa, announced that Russia has initiated discussions with Syria’s political committee, which is currently operating from a hotel in Damascus. These talks have included meetings with Russia’s diplomatic staff, focusing on ensuring the security of Russia’s diplomatic mission and citizens in Syria.

Bogdanov emphasized that the dialogue between Russia and Syria is proceeding constructively, and he expressed hope that the new authorities will uphold their promises, particularly regarding security and the protection of foreign diplomatic missions. He also stressed that the fight against terrorism, especially the Daesh/ISIS group, is ongoing, and Russia’s military bases in Syria continue to play a crucial role in countering international terrorism.

Bashar al-Assad, who had ruled Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia following the collapse of his regime when anti-regime forces took control of Damascus.
