Majority of Americans reject Trump’s plan to control Gaza

According to the results of a recent poll, 64% of Americans are against President Donald Trump’s plan for the US to “own” and “take over” the Gaza Strip and turn it into what he called the “Riviera of the Middle East.”

According to the survey, which was carried out by the progressive think tank and polling company Data for Progress, a sizable percentage of respondents voiced strong opposition to the idea, with 47% stating they “strongly” oppose it and 17% stating they “somewhat” oppose it.

43% of Republicans were against the plan, compared to 85% of Democrats. Meanwhile, the initiative was endorsed by 46% of Republican respondents.

Such a proposal would include “forcibly resettling” the approximately 1.8 million Palestinians who currently reside in Gaza to neighbouring nations, according to the poll, which polled 1,200 respondents across the United States.

According to Data for Progress’s findings, “a sizable majority of voters oppose the United States taking control of Gaza and uprooting its Palestinian population.”

A tenuous ceasefire agreement that went into effect in Gaza on January 19 halted Israel’s 15-month assault, which has left the enclave in ruins and killed over 48,200 people. Trump’s plan to forcibly relocate Palestinians has been strongly opposed by Palestinians as well as the larger Arab and Muslim world.

Due to Israel’s years-long embargo, Gaza has essentially become the biggest open-air prison in the world.

Severe shortages of food, water, and medication, about 2 million of its 2.3 million inhabitants have been forcibly relocated since the beginning of the conflict following an attack by the Palestinian organisation Hamas on October 7, 2023.
