PECA aims to safeguard free speech: Attaullah Tarar

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, has stated that the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) is designed to protect freedom of speech while addressing the issue of fake news.

Speaking at a ceremony in Lahore, Tarar described that digital media presently lacks editorial oversight, making the introduction of PECA necessary after careful reflection.

He also exposed that prominent figures from the private sector will be included in the Digital Media Protection Authority.

Discussing the objectives of PECA, the minister emphasized its goal to safeguard journalists and prevent harassment. He assured that press clubs and journalist unions would be consulted regarding the new authority.

Tarar further highlighted ongoing digital transformation efforts at PTV, the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation, and the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), mentioning that these institutions are undergoing reforms. As part of this modernization, a newly established digital department, incorporating Artificial Intelligence, is being cohesive into the process.
