Celebrating a Hero: Sandeep Singh’s Tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

Sandeep Singh, renowned Indian filmmaker known for producing acclaimed films such as “Mary Kom” and “Aligarh,” is set to direct “The Pride of Bharat – Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj,” a biopic celebrating the revered 17th-century Indian ruler Shivaji Bhonsle.

The biopic marks Singh’s debut as a theatrical feature film director, following his directorial debut with the transgender-themed ZEE5 streaming original, “Safed.”

Shivaji Bhonsle, who founded the Maratha empire amidst the rule of Muslim monarchs in 17th century India, is celebrated for his strategic prowess and military acumen, solidifying his status as a revered Hindu nationalist hero.

In contemporary Indian politics, Shivaji remains a symbolic figure for parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena, playing a significant role in the political landscape of Maharashtra.

Singh’s previous productions, including “PM Narendra Modi” and “Main Atal Hoon,” underscore his inclination towards projects aligned with the BJP’s political ethos.

“The Pride of Bharat – Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj” was officially launched by India’s Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, further emphasizing its political significance.

Shivaji’s enduring popularity is evidenced by the numerous adaptations of his story in Indian cinema and television, with over 60 portrayals since the silent film “Sinhagad” in 1923.

The biopic, a joint venture between Immerso Studio and Legend Studios, is slated to have a substantial budget and will be released in multiple languages, including Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Marathi.
