Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has unveiled plans for his “biggest film ever,” titled Syndicate. The film centers around a powerful criminal organisation threatening the very fabric of India’s existence. Varma explained that the movie explores the evolution of criminal entities, from street gangs of the 70s to political factions, smugglers, and now corporate syndicates like D Company.
Varma noted that there has been no significant criminal group in India in the last decade, but the current climate of intense polarisation could give rise to a new kind of criminal syndicate, involving a dangerous alliance of politicians, law enforcement, wealthy businessmen, and the military.
Syndicate promises to be a chilling film, exposing the horrific potential of human beings, without relying on supernatural elements. It delves into the cyclical nature of crime and terror, showing how these forces constantly evolve into more dangerous forms.
Set in a near-future scenario, the film’s plot will unfold around a shadowy group aiming to replace India with a “new India,” and will kick off with the statement, “Only man can be the most terrifying animal.”
Varma mentioned that Syndicate marks his return to high-quality cinema, a vow he made after revisiting his 1998 film Satya. He expressed a desire to redeem his past cinematic mistakes with this project. Details about the cast and other aspects will be revealed soon.
