Major Komal Masood: Pakistan’s trailblazer in peacekeeping and gender advocacy

Last year, Pakistani Major Komal Masood, 33, became the first UN peacekeeper in the Central African Republic (CAR) to earn the 2023 Certificate of Recognition for her gender advocacy activities. She is now a platoon commander at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) in Kakul, motivating future women officers.
Masood guides 17 women cadets, including two Bangladeshis, through tough military manoeuvres, weapon training, and strategic lessons. She incorporates her CAR leadership abilities and insights into her training to share her knowledge.
Masood was a gender and protection advisor at the UN, ensuring gender perspectives were integrated into intelligence and planning. She designed UN-approved child protection, sexual exploitation, abuse prevention, and civilian safety regulations that were applied worldwide. She created a thorough checklist for women peacekeepers, covering a vital operational guidance need.

Masood investigated wrongdoing and repatriated numerous offenders in addition to policymaking. For her, UN recognition was a “morale boost,” confirming her gender advocacy work’s lasting impact.
However, the role presented personal obstacles. Although leaving her two young children—including an infant—was painful, Masood remained committed to her cause. In reflection, she stated, “If my country and superiors entrust me with a task, I must see it through.” Her family’s joy and support, especially her daughter’s desire to follow her, have been her greatest rewards.
Masood advises women to always strive. If you’re a professional or a homemaker, strive for excellence.” Major Komal Masood breaks barriers and creates paths with her enthusiasm and determination.
