UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the crucial importance of strengthening relations with the US and revitalizing ties with Europe for Britain’s national security.
Speaking at the historic Lord Mayor’s Banquet in London, Starmer stressed the significance of transatlantic partnerships.
“The notion that we must choose between our allies, that we are either with America or Europe, is entirely wrong. I reject it completely,” he said, emphasizing that the UK’s “national interest” requires cooperation with both.
Highlighting the strategic value of US relations, he explained that the connection was based on “hard-headed realism” rather than sentimentality.
“Our relationship with the US has been the cornerstone of our security and prosperity for over a century,” he stated.
On European relations, Starmer committed to rebuilding ties and reiterated the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. He stressed the need to strengthen alliances in these “dangerous times,” emphasizing that closer US relations, a firm commitment to NATO, and renewed European ties are essential for the UK’s growth and security.
The Prime Minister also reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to peace in Lebanon and called for an end to the Gaza conflict, advocating for increased humanitarian aid to civilians in affected areas.
Regarding Syria, Starmer urged all parties to pursue a political resolution and halt hostilities.
