DC Orders Setup of TDP Camps in Anticipation of Security Operation in Lower Kurram

In light of an expected counterterrorism operation in Lower Kurram, Kurram’s Deputy Commissioner (DC) has ordered the establishment of temporary displaced persons (TDP) camps in the region. This decision, made on January 17, follows the rising tensions due to ongoing security issues and comes amidst increased attacks on aid convoys heading to Parachinar. The attacks have worsened the already dire situation, with food and medicine shortages exacerbated by road blockades.

The directive from DC Javedullah Mehsud, addressed to the relief secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Rehabilitation and Settlement Department, outlines the relocation of over 1,000 families from several affected areas in Lower Kurram. The families will be moved from regions such as Baggan, Mandori/Uchat/Charkhel, and Chapri Paraw due to the threat of the counterterrorism operation. The letter also details the establishment of four designated sites in Thall, including educational institutions and government buildings, to house the displaced individuals.

This decision comes after a series of attacks this month, including a January 4 assault that left the Kurram DC injured. Additionally, an earlier attack on a convoy in Bagan on November 21 resulted in the tragic loss of 50 lives. Clashes stemming from longstanding land disputes have further contributed to the escalating violence, resulting in over 130 fatalities.

In a related development, protests in Lower Kurram’s Bagan area have been ongoing for several weeks. Residents have been demanding compensation and the reconstruction of their town, which was severely damaged during an attack following the November convoy ambush. Protesters have threatened to block convoys heading to Parachinar until their demands are met.
