The death toll from Thursday’s terrorist attack on an aid convoy in Kurram has risen to five, including two security personnel, officials confirmed on Friday. The attack also resulted in the deaths of three drivers, left five others missing, and injured five security personnel.
According to police, the convoy, which was delivering essential supplies to the crisis-hit region, was ambushed, with trucks looted and set on fire. Security forces retaliated, killing six assailants.
Kurram Additional Deputy Commissioner Shaukat Ali reported that three vehicles were damaged in the attack. The convoy, which consisted of 35 trucks loaded with goods, was escorted by police, Frontier Corps (FC), and other security forces. After the attack, the convoy was halted and sent back to ensure safety.
This attack represents a significant setback to the peace agreement that had recently allowed aid to reach the region, which had been suffering from tribal violence, resulting in over 130 deaths and a 100-day closure of routes.
Residents expressed dissatisfaction with the aid provided, calling it insufficient. Meanwhile, helicopter services for patient transfers in Kurram have been suspended for 10 days, further worsening the crisis.
