Bangladesh garment industry recovers, but workers report minimal improvements

Bangladesh’s garment industry, a key sector responsible for 80% of the country’s exports, is recovering after a period of unrest that severely impacted production. Last year, violent protests over labor rights, which were instrumental in toppling the government, led to factory closures and mass layoffs. However, following a wage increase of 5% in September, the industry rebounded, with many factories operating at full capacity. Despite this, workers remain dissatisfied, feeling that the wage hike was insufficient and accompanied by increased production targets.

Garment worker Khatun, earning $140 a month, expressed frustration that little had changed, as she struggled to meet tough production quotas while supporting her family. Others, like Rana, who had his salary reduced following the unrest, reported similar difficulties. Workers also face rising living costs and long hours with few breaks, despite improved factory facilities.

Labor rights activists, such as Taslima Akhter, argue that factory owners must take responsibility and negotiate better with international buyers to ensure fair wages and better working conditions. While the industry has shown fiscal growth, experts like Abdullah Hil Raquib warn that the recovery remains fragile and may not be sustainable in the long term.
