Punjab, Spain discuss strengthening trade relations

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has emphasized that Spain is Pakistan’s second-largest export partner in the European Union, highlighting significant opportunities to boost bilateral trade.

She made these remarks during a meeting with a Spanish Senate delegation on Monday, where discussions focused on enhancing trade, tourism, and bilateral relations between Spain and Punjab.

The meeting also covered potential collaborations in areas such as the economy, climate change, disaster risk management, and environmental pollution.

“We value Spain’s support in securing GSP Plus status and hold our friendly relations in high regard,” she said, adding that Punjab aims to collaborate with Spain on early warning systems and rescue services to mitigate flood damage.

She further stated that Punjab is working to establish itself as a tourist hub and welcomes Spanish investment in the sector, with a special package being prepared to support foreign investors.

Expressing sympathy for the recent floods in Valencia, Spain, which resulted in significant loss of life and property, she offered cooperation for relief and rehabilitation efforts.

During their visit to the Punjab Assembly, the delegation also discussed the exchange of parliamentary delegations to strengthen bilateral ties. Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan highlighted initiatives aimed at improving parliamentary transparency, such as opening standing committee hearings to the media.

Senator Vicente Azpitarte conveyed Spain’s eagerness to deepen cooperation with Pakistan, particularly in disaster management, renewable energy, and agriculture.
