Donald Trump found himself in hot water on Thursday following sexist remarks made at a campaign rally—just the latest instance of lewd and disrespectful comments about women from the former president and his supporters.
“I want to protect the women of our country… whether the women like it or not,” Trump said on Wednesday while discussing his stance on abortion. His comments sparked backlash from women across the political spectrum, led by his White House rival Kamala Harris.
The Democratic vice president called Trump’s statement “very offensive to women,” especially as the upcoming election is expected to further highlight gender divides, with Trump performing particularly well among male voters.
This is not the first time the 78-year-old billionaire has faced criticism for his views on women, and his recent remarks are not even the most egregious. In 2016, just days before his election showdown with Hillary Clinton, a video surfaced in which Trump bragged about using his celebrity status to “grab women,” leading to global outrage.
Despite the backlash, Trump ultimately defeated Clinton.
Now, in his third presidential campaign—once again against a woman after losing to Joe Biden in 2020—Trump is attempting to project an image of strength. During the campaign, Donald Trump made derogatory remarks about Kamala Harris, labeling her as “mentally retarded” and “crazy.” He insinuated that if she were to be elected, she would serve as “a play toy” for other world leaders. Additionally, he ridiculed her distinctive laugh and implied on his Truth Social platform that her career accomplishments were a result of sexual favors.
