Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Donald Trump on his “historic victory” in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, marking his return to the White House as the 47th president. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Shehbaz addressed Trump as the president-elect, conveying his hope that under Trump’s leadership, the relationship between the United States and Pakistan would grow stronger.
Trump, who declared his victory in a speech to his supporters, was projected by U.S. media, including Fox News, to have secured 277 electoral votes, surpassing his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, who garnered 226 votes.
In addition to PM Shehbaz’s message, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Omar Ayub Khan also congratulated Trump and his Vice President-elect, JD Vance. He expressed optimism that Trump’s victory would lead to enhanced ties between Pakistan and the United States, with PTI’s official account noting that the American public’s mandate had been respected, drawing a contrast with Pakistan’s own political struggles.
On the other hand, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari celebrated Trump’s win as an “anti-war” mandate. In his message, Bhutto-Zardari expressed hope that the incoming administration would focus on fostering global peace, reflecting the PPP’s long-standing stance on diplomatic efforts and peaceful resolutions to international conflicts.
The messages of congratulations from Pakistan’s political leaders underscore the anticipation surrounding the potential for a renewed and dynamic relationship between Pakistan and the United States under the newly elected Trump administration.
