The 28-year-old Gilgit-Baltistani native Anita Karim is Pakistan’s first female MMA competitor, and she has made a name for herself on the global scene. She started out in taekwondo and jiu-jitsu in her birthplace, but it was while attending Islamabad High School that she discovered mixed martial arts. Anita was able to secure a spot in Asia’s ONE Championship thanks to her perseverance, even though she faced initial criticism from her conservative community.
Anita has garnered praise for her ferocious performances in the ring, earning the nickname “the arm collector” for her distinctive armlock technique. The encouragement and belief in her family, particularly her brother and coach Uloomi, helped her develop her abilities and overcome obstacles, she says. She is now a respected role model for women all throughout Pakistan as she trains in Islamabad and coaches aspiring warriors.
As a result of Anita’s achievements, Gilgit-Baltistan is now home to a slew of female MMA fighters. With her unwavering resolve and exceptional talent, Anita aspires to inspire Pakistani women, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to overcome the challenges of public harassment and build their self-confidence. Even when she’s not fighting, she’s committed to addressing gender inequality and empowering women in sports.
