Professionals advise against overusing screen time to avoid “Dry Eye syndrome”

In Islamabad: According to experts, they are warning that dry eye syndrome (DES) is on the rise due to excessive screen time and are recommending that people take frequent breaks to avoid harming their eyes. According to Jinnah Medical & Dental College’s Head of Ophthalmology, Dr. Shahid Azeem Mirza, gazing at a screen for lengthy periods of time decreases our blink rate by 60–70%, which interrupts the natural flow of tears and raises the risk of eye discomfort and long-term damage.

Dr. Mirza suggests that people with DES participate in regular blinking exercises and set screen-time reminders to help them remember to blink more often. Because children’s eyes are still developing, he said, it’s especially crucial to minimize their screen time.

Parents should monitor their children’s screen time and encourage them to participate in health-promoting activities. Experts also caution that computer glare adds to eye strain, so it’s crucial to use appropriate lighting and screen modifications to protect your eyes.
