Biden doubts the likelihood of full-scale war in the Middle East

On Thursday, U.S. President Joe Biden addressed concerns regarding escalating tensions in the Middle East, stating that he does not foresee an all-out war in the region. Responding to a question about his confidence in preventing a full-scale conflict, Biden remarked, “I don’t believe there’s going to be an all-out war. I think we can prevent it.” He acknowledged, however, that significant challenges remain and emphasized the need for continued diplomatic efforts, reiterating, “There’s a lot to do yet.”

Biden’s remarks come in the wake of heightened hostilities following a ballistic missile attack launched by Iran targeting Israel earlier in the week. The attack prompted swift retaliatory strikes from Israel, aimed at Iranian positions in southern Lebanon, highlighting the fragile security situation. In the immediate aftermath, Israeli forces conducted airstrikes on various locations, including Beirut’s southern suburbs and specific areas in the Mount Lebanon Governorate. Notably, neighborhoods such as Hay al-Sellom and an apartment complex in Chiyah were among those hit, raising concerns about civilian casualties and further escalation.

When questioned about the possibility of deploying American troops to support Israel, Biden stressed that the U.S. has already provided substantial assistance to its ally. “We are going to protect Israel,” he asserted, reaffirming the U.S. commitment to Israeli security. This statement underscores the ongoing U.S. role in the region and its strategic partnership with Israel amid growing tensions.

As the situation develops, the international community remains watchful, hoping that diplomatic channels can effectively address the escalating violence and prevent a broader conflict in the Middle East. The complexities of regional dynamics, coupled with external influences, make the path to peace a challenging endeavor, necessitating concerted efforts from all parties involved.
