Israeli newspaper puts Imran Khan in a difficult position

As Israel faces growing isolation due to its brutal invasion of Gaza, which has claimed over 43,000 lives—mostly women and children—since October last year, The Jerusalem Post has published an optimistic opinion piece on the “increasing” recognition of Israel within the Muslim world.

In the article by Harry Richer, the author suggests that figures like imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan could play a pivotal role in shifting public opinion and military policy in Pakistan toward Israel.

Titled “Redrawing Israel’s Geopolitical Map on Abraham Accords’ Anniversary,” the piece notes that while Pakistan has historically adopted a pro-Palestinian stance, there have been signs in recent years of a desire to improve relations with Israel. It mentions that despite Khan’s strong criticisms of Israeli policies, he has hinted at the need for Pakistan to carve out its own foreign policy, especially as other Muslim countries begin normalizing relations with Israel out of self-interest.

Citing the PTI’s impressive performance in the February 8 general elections, the article argues that Khan’s influence—or the rise of a similarly pragmatic leader—could create opportunities for Pakistan to reassess its longstanding hostility toward Israel, particularly amid its ongoing economic crises.

The piece outlines potential benefits for Pakistan in sectors like economy, technology, agriculture, cybersecurity, and defense should it “normalize” relations with Israel—a term that indicates Pakistan does not officially recognize the state. Richer highlights that trade between Israel and the UAE surged by 124% to $2.59 billion year-on-year in 2022.

The author concludes that a more diversified foreign policy could yield strategic advantages for Pakistan as it navigates its complex relationships with India and Afghanistan.
