Russia announces capture of additional settlement in ongoing offensive in Ukraine’s Donetsk Region

On Thursday, Russia announced that it had gained control of another settlement in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, where it continues its offensive on multiple fronts.

According to a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry, its forces captured the village of Heorhiivka, located approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Pokrovsk, a key area in Moscow’s ongoing operations in eastern Ukraine.

Russia has regularly reported territorial gains in recent months, particularly around Pokrovsk, which serves as an important logistics hub for the Ukrainian military in the Donetsk region, bordering Russia.

This area has been a focal point for Russian-backed separatist activities from 2014 to 2022, prior to the onset of the current war.

Ukrainian authorities have not yet responded to Russia’s claim, and independent verification of the situation remains challenging due to the ongoing conflict that began over two and a half years ago.
