UN: Pager detonations across Lebanon raise ‘extreme concern’

Deadly pager detonations across Lebanon are “extremely concerning,” a UN official said on Tuesday.

This story was developing just before the briefing. We’re, of course, closely monitoring the situation in Beirut and other parts of Lebanon. These events are extremely concerning, particularly given the highly volatile context,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters.

At least eight people were killed and 2,750 injured in simultaneous pager explosions across Lebanon.

Dujarric added that the UN has no additional information beyond what’s being reported by the media.

“We, of course, deplore the civilian casualties that have occurred, and we continue to monitor the situation closely,” he said.

A Lebanese official condemned the explosions as “Israeli aggression.”

Lebanese resistance group Hezbollah confirmed that two of its members were among those killed, with many others injured in the blasts.

The detonations occurred amid ongoing cross-border attacks between Hezbollah and Israel, following Israel’s intense military offensive on the Gaza Strip, which has left more than 41,200 dead, mostly women and children, since a Hamas attack on October 7.
