Kolkata college Principal accused of interfering in rape case

India’s federal police have charged Sandip Ghosh, the former head of R. G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata, with tampering with evidence related to the rape and murder of a junior female doctor, a case that ignited weeks of nationwide protests.

Ghosh, who is already in police custody on corruption charges, faces additional allegations following a petition filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday.

The CBI also arrested Abhijit Mondal, the officer in charge of the police station overseeing the college, for failing to secure the crime scene, according to sources with direct knowledge of the case.

A senior Kolkata police official stated that they would address the charges in court. The lawyer representing Ghosh could not be reached for comment.

The case of the 31-year-old doctor, whose body was discovered at the college over a month ago, sparked widespread protests by doctors advocating for enhanced safety for women in the workplace and justice for their colleague.
