A special US Navy team is reportedly undergoing training for a potential conflict over Taiwan, according to a media report released on Thursday.
The report, cited by the Financial Times, revealed that US Navy SEAL Team 6 — the same unit that carried out the 2011 operation to kill Osama bin Laden — has been preparing for missions to support Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.
SEAL Team 6, regarded as the “most elite” force in the US military, has been involved in “planning and training” for more than a year at their Dam Neck headquarters in Virginia Beach, approximately 250 kilometers (155 miles) southeast of Washington, D.C.
Taiwan has become a flashpoint in the Asia-Pacific region, with the US supplying the island with weapons and military aid.
China considers Taiwan a “breakaway province,” though the island has maintained its independence since 1949.
In addition, the Pentagon has sent special forces to train Taiwanese troops, a move that has provoked strong reactions from Beijing.
