In Islamabad, as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices soar by Rs20 per kg just before Ramazan due to hoarding and profiteering, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and LPG Distributors Association are meeting today to devise a joint strategy against this illegal increase.
Chairman of OGRA and officials will hold discussions with the Chairman of the LPG Distributors Association, Irfan Khokhar, to formulate an action plan to combat LPG profiteering ahead of Ramazan.
Consumers are left puzzled by the sudden price surge, while authorities have yet to take action against the LPG mafia, which is taking advantage of consumers for excessive profits.
Despite the government’s Ramazan relief package not being implemented, the chairman of the LPG Distributors Association has called for decisive measures against this exploitation by the unscrupulous LPG mafia.
Following the hike in gas prices, LPG prices have skyrocketed, with domestic cylinder prices rising by Rs240 and commercial cylinder prices by Rs910.
With natural gas still inaccessible, the LPG mafia is now exploiting LPG as well, perpetuating the cycle of exploitation.
Khokhar emphasized that if the government sets the LPG price at Rs257 per kg, it must also ensure availability at this rate. He urged the prime minister to address the mafia’s exploitation, which began immediately after his inauguration.
Khokhar advocated for LPG to be available at government rates during Ramazan, along with lower-priced food items, especially considering the decline in global LPG prices.
