EVs expected to represent 50% of auto sales by 2030

Up to 50% of vehicle sales in Pakistan could be electrified by 2030, according to BYD Pakistan, a joint venture between China’s BYD and Pakistan’s Mega Motors. This aligns with global targets for electric vehicle (EV) adoption.

Last month, Warren Buffett-backed BYD entered the Pakistani market, introducing three EV models in August and planning to open an assembly plant by early 2026. Kamran Kamal, BYD Pakistan’s spokesperson and CEO of Hub Power, stated that NEV (New Energy Vehicle) adoption could reach up to 50%.

The ambitious goal faces challenges, as Pakistan’s auto market has traditionally been dominated by Japanese brands like Toyota, Honda, and Suzuki, with overall vehicle sales recently hitting a 15-year low. While hybrid vehicle sales have surged in the past year, achieving 50% NEV adoption by 2030 may be difficult due to infrastructure limitations, according to Muhammad Abrar Polani, an auto sector analyst.

Initially, BYD Pakistan will sell fully assembled vehicles, which incur higher import duties compared to locally assembled units. Kamal emphasized the goal of having locally assembled EVs on the road as soon as possible and is currently assessing the size of the new assembly plant.
