ECP dismisses PTI’s four appeals regarding party elections

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has rejected four applications submitted by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in relation to its intra-party election case. The PTI had questioned the ECP’s authority to oversee intra-party polls, sought the return of records seized by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and requested a delay in the case pending a Supreme Court ruling. However, the ECP ruled that it has the jurisdiction to verify if the party elections were conducted in accordance with the law and the party’s constitution.

The commission emphasized its responsibility to ensure compliance with Sections 208 and 209 of the Elections Act, 2017, which mandate that political parties must hold periodic elections. It also noted complaints from PTI members about irregularities in the party’s March 2024 elections.

The ECP advised PTI to take legal action in a competent court if it wants the return of seized documents and rejected PTI’s request to delay proceedings. The matter is scheduled for further arguments on September 18. PTI plans to challenge the ECP’s decision in the high court.
