The Lahore High Court (LHC) has annulled the appointment of Lieutenant General Munir Afsar as Chairman of NADRA. The ruling, delivered on Friday, followed a review of a petition challenging the legality and constitutionality of Afsar’s appointment.
Justice Asim Hafeez announced the verdict after hearing arguments from both parties. The petitioner, a woman, contended that Afsar’s appointment did not meet legal and constitutional standards.
Afsar was appointed as NADRA Chairman on October 2 of the previous year, following approval by the federal cabinet from a shortlist of three candidates recommended by the Ministry of Interior. These candidates were deemed the most suitable for the role by the selection committee.
The appointment occurred after the resignation of the previous NADRA Chairman, Tariq Malik, who stepped down following a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Malik resigned amid an investigation by the Federal Investigation Agency into corruption allegations. Malik had initially been appointed to the position on June 21 during the PTI government’s tenure.
