On Friday, the Supreme Court (SC) reinstated the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) amendments by accepting the federal government’s review petition.
The unanimous 5-0 decision, which had been reserved since June 6, was delivered by a five-member bench led by Justice Qazi Faez Isa, with an additional note provided by Justice Athar Minallah. The SC stated that detailed reasons for the ruling would be shared later.
The federal and provincial governments had submitted intra-court appeals after the NAB amendments were previously declared unconstitutional. The SC had reserved its decision on the federal government’s appeal on June 6.
Previously, the apex court had struck down the NAB amendments following a petition by the PTI founder. In a 2-1 majority decision, the SC accepted former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s challenge to the accountability law amendments made under the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led government, which reinstated corruption cases against public officials that had been dismissed due to the amendments.
