Price magistrates crack down on small vendors

In Rawalpindi district, the 60 Price Control Magistrates are reportedly targeting only small grocery vendors and street vendors with fines, while no penalties have been imposed on wholesale dealers, who are seen as contributing to price inflation.

Sources indicate that wholesale dealers often display banners supporting Chief Minister’s promotions, including Dengue and Polio awareness campaigns, which appears to curry favor with district administration officials.

These wholesale dealers, identified as significant political financiers, are reportedly exempt from scrutiny, with any Price Control Magistrate who challenges them facing restrictions. The Price Control Committee, which includes political activists from the ruling party, is also accused of conducting meetings merely for show.

Inflation is severely impacting consumers, with Cheap Bazaars and various weekly markets becoming known for selling unhealthy and rotten grocery items. Current prices in the open market include chicken at Rs620 per kg, eggs at Rs305 per dozen, white gram at Rs550 per kg, rice at Rs500 per kg, pulses at Rs400 per kg, and other essentials at similarly high rates.
