At least 11 people killed in new Israeli strike on school housing displaced Gazans

At least 11 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced people in Gaza City on Sunday, according to a medical source.

The strike targeted Safad School in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood, causing multiple injuries. The medical source updated the death toll from 6 to 11, with several others injured and taken to Al-Ahli Arab Hospital.

Witnesses reported that the intensity of the bombing resulted in bodies being “torn apart and scattered.” The attack also destroyed one of the school’s buildings, which had been housing hundreds of displaced individuals.

Following Israeli threats, the Palestinian Civil Defense Agency evacuated the school. Israel has been targeting civilian facilities, including schools, hospitals, and places of worship, as part of its ongoing offensive on the Gaza Strip, despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire.

Last month, an Israeli strike on the Al-Taba’een School in Gaza City killed at least 100 people and injured dozens more. The current offensive has resulted in over 40,700 Palestinian deaths, primarily among women and children, and more than 94,100 injuries, according to local health authorities.

The blockade of Gaza has led to severe shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, leaving the region devastated. Israel faces accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice, which has ordered a halt to military operations in Rafah, where over one million Palestinians had sought refuge before the area was invaded on May 6.
