Heavy rainfall claims Over 30 lives, schools shut down in mountainous areas of Pakistan

Officials reported that more than 30 individuals have lost their lives in rain-related incidents following days of heavy downpours, with thousands of schools forced to close as a result.

The extensive rainfall since Thursday has led to significant disruptions in various parts of the country, prompting the closure of all schools in Balochistan until Thursday.

Among the fatalities, 18 children were among the 26 individuals killed in collapsed buildings in northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).

Taimur Ali Khan, spokesperson for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority in K-P, stated, “A total of 27 individuals have lost their lives due to continuous rainfall over the past four days in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.”

Additionally, one person was killed in a landslide, and more than 150 houses sustained damage.

In Balochistan, five fatalities occurred when buildings collapsed on Thursday and Friday, according to Jahanzain Khan, head of the disaster management agency.

Reports indicate that damaged roads, floods, and landslides have isolated villages from main towns in Balochistan, while major roads have been blocked in Gilgit-Baltistan. The Meteorological Department has forecasted further rainfall and snowfall across the region on Sunday.
