PTI appeals to SC to uphold reserved seats order

On Monday, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) filed a petition with the Supreme Court requesting the enforcement of the July 12 judgment on reserved seats, urging the court to reject the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) plea to reconsider its decision. PTI argues that the ECP’s application is an attempt to delay the implementation of the court’s ruling. The ECP had previously sought a review, claiming that the court had granted relief to PTI despite the party not being properly registered or having claimed reserved seats for women and non-Muslims.

The PTI’s petition, filed by senior counsel Uzair Karamat Bhandari, contends that the ECP’s actions are aimed at denying the party its due reserved seats in parliament. PTI asserts that it has complied with legal requirements, including completing intra-party elections and submitting necessary documents. The petition highlights that the ECP has previously recognized PTI’s organizational structure and its office-bearers, asserting that any confirmations of candidates by PTI should be considered valid.

In a separate development, PTI Senator Azam Swati visited the Supreme Court to inquire about the party’s reference against the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) but was denied access to the registrar’s office. Swati criticized CEC Sikander Sultan Raja for allegedly denying PTI its rights and demanded the immediate issuance of the notification for Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah’s elevation to Chief Justice of Pakistan, referencing the previous early notification for Justice Qazi Faez Isa. Swati also mentioned that former Prime Minister Imran Khan had canceled a PTI public meeting to maintain peace while the Supreme Court was addressing the Mubarak Sani case.
