On Sunday, Shahbaz Sharif, representing an alliance led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), emerged victorious in the National Assembly’s election, securing his position as the 24th Prime Minister of Pakistan. The Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, announced that Sharif garnered 201 votes out of the 293 cast, surpassing his opponent Omar Ayub Khan, a candidate backed by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, who secured 92 votes.
With Sharif’s victory, he has officially been declared as the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Achieving the required majority, Sharif received support from various parties including the PML-N, Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan, and other allies, totaling 169 votes.
Following the general elections held on February 8, 2024, the National Assembly saw the election of Sadiq as Speaker and Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah as his deputy on Friday, marking the formation of the new house.
