Former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan announces his retirement

Former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from cricket on Saturday, ending a career in which he became known as a prolific top-order batsman.

Dhawan, who made his international debut for India against Australia in 2010, played his final match against Bangladesh in December 2022, both in One Day Internationals, which were his strong suit.

In a video shared on social media, the 38-year-old stated, “It’s important to turn the page and move forward in life, and that’s why I’m announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket.”

He added, “Don’t feel sad that you won’t play for India anymore, but feel happy that you played for the country.”

Dhawan, a left-hander, scored 24 international centuries and particularly shone in multi-team tournaments like the Champions Trophy, Asia Cup, and the 2015 World Cup. His 85-ball century against Australia in 2013 remains the fastest by a debutant.

Dhawan also served as captain for India in various limited-overs series when regular captains were rested.

In June, following India’s T20 World Cup victory, cricket legends Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also announced their retirement from T20 internationals.
