On Thursday, the Federal Investigation Authority (FIA) arrested prominent columnist and televangelist Orya Maqbool Jan in Lahore over allegations of hate speech and derogatory remarks against state institutions.
The FIA raided Jan’s residence in DHA Phase 6, Lahore, leading to his arrest. The FIA spokesperson indicated that Jan will be brought before the court to request his physical remand in connection with the charges.
Section 11 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) addresses hate speech, targeting individuals who produce or disseminate information through any electronic system or device that promotes or is likely to promote interfaith, sectarian, or racial hatred.
This section aims at those who distribute content—be it text, audio, video, or other forms—that advances or could advance hatred based on faith, sect, or race.
Penalties for hate speech under this law can include imprisonment for up to seven years, fines, or both, designed to prevent the spread of content that could incite social discord, conflicts, or tensions.
