Six more adiala jail employees arrested for allegedly aiding Imran Khan

Following the arrest of a former deputy superintendent, law enforcement agencies (LEAs) have detained six additional Adiala jail employees for allegedly assisting Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, according to sources reported by Geo News on Tuesday.

The arrested individuals include a sweeper, two female wardens, and three officials responsible for monitoring surveillance cameras. Sources indicate that three of the detained employees are women, who are accused of facilitating communication between Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. The cell phones of these employees have been confiscated.

In response, the manpower assigned to monitor Adiala jail has been increased. Earlier, on August 14, former Deputy Superintendent Muhammad Akram was arrested for allegedly aiding the PTI leader. Akram was removed from his post on June 20, and Deputy Superintendent Judicial Tahir Siddique Shah was appointed as his replacement.

It is alleged that Akram secretly conveyed messages from Imran Khan to the outside world. The LEAs have informed the Inspector General of Prisons, Punjab, about Akram’s arrest and ongoing investigation. Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned for over a year, faces multiple cases including those related to Toshakhana, cipher issues, and an un-Islamic marriage. His wife, Bushra Bibi, has also been in custody for several months.

Despite initial hopes for their release in July, these were thwarted when the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested them on new charges related to the sale of state gifts. Imran Khan’s prospects for release have further diminished following his involvement in several cases related to the May 9, 2023, riots, which erupted after his detention from the Islamabad High Court and led to attacks on government and military sites.
