The United States advocates for collaboration with the IMF

The United States expresses support for Pakistan’s endeavors to break away from the cycle of debt and financing, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other global financial institutions, as stated by a spokesperson from the State Department.

Highlighting the urgency of prioritizing economic matters, the spokesperson stressed the significance of policies in maintaining stability for the Pakistani populace in the coming months. This statement was made in response to inquiries regarding a letter sent by former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan to the IMF, proposing that any future loan facility be contingent upon an audit of the February 8 general elections.

The spokesperson affirmed the United States’ backing for Pakistan’s efforts to break free from debt and international financing dependencies, emphasizing that the long-term stability of Pakistan’s economy is pivotal.

In recent years, Pakistan has grappled with financial difficulties, including dwindling foreign exchange reserves and a devaluing national currency.

Previously, the PTI had raised concerns with the IMF about incorporating Pakistan’s political stability into discussions concerning further financial assistance.

During a press conference in Islamabad, PTI representative Barrister Gohar Ali Khan confirmed the party’s communication with the IMF, hinting at the content of the letter. He mentioned the party’s emphasis on the IMF’s commitment to transparent elections in Pakistan.

The letter, addressed to IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, outlined the PTI’s stance on facilitating necessary reforms alongside loan facilities to ensure repayment. It underscored the importance of negotiating with an elected government possessing the confidence of the people, citing a policy guidance note from 1997.

The PTI urged the IMF to consider these factors, emphasizing the moral authority of a legitimately elected government in implementing taxation measures.
