President Dr. Arif Alvi On Wednesday, signed a summary sent by Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar to summon the inaugural session of the 16th National Assembly. However, President Alvi expressed dissatisfaction with the “tone and tenor” used by the interim PM, noting it as “unfortunate” and containing baseless allegations.
A press release from the President’s Secretariat stated that while approving the session, President Alvi expressed reservations and expected the resolution of the issue of reserved seats before the 21st day, as mandated by Article 91(2).
Earlier, Dr. Alvi had returned a summary from the caretaker government due to the non-allocation of reserved seats to the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), a party comprising PTI-backed independent lawmakers. However, he ultimately signed the second summary, although he found the tone and language used by the interim PM unacceptable.
President Alvi emphasized the need for objectivity and neutrality, in line with his constitutional responsibilities, and expressed concern over discrepancies in the electoral and government formation processes.
He reiterated his commitment to upholding the Constitution and stressed the importance of adhering to its provisions, particularly Article 51 and clause 2 of Article 91.
President Alvi also highlighted the ongoing exercise by the Election Commission of Pakistan regarding Article 51, the outcome of which was expected by the 21st day. However, no decision had been reached by the commission at the time of his statement.
