Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has committed to taking stringent measures against corruption within power distribution companies. He underscored the government’s dedication to addressing electricity theft, minimizing line losses, and enhancing the power distribution system.
In a review meeting on energy sector reforms at the Prime Minister’s House, he instructed both federal and provincial authorities to implement a comprehensive strategy to combat electricity theft.
The Prime Minister noted that new chairpersons and board members have been appointed to five power distribution companies through a transparent process, expressing confidence that these changes will improve the performance of the distribution companies (DISCOs).
He also directed the federal minister for power and the federal secretary for power to visit all provinces to oversee the performance of power distribution companies and collaborate with provincial governments.
PM Shehbaz called for an increase in police personnel and tehsildars as needed by DISCOs to support the fight against electricity theft.
Additionally, he ordered the prompt convening of a steering committee meeting to discuss transitioning agricultural tube wells in Balochistan to solar power, noting that standard operating procedures (SOPs) and notifications for this initiative have already been issued.
The Prime Minister emphasized the need to make the public grievance redressal system within distribution companies more effective and results-driven.
