The United States has requested information from Pakistan regarding Asif Merchant, a Pakistani citizen arrested for allegedly plotting a murder on American soil.
US intelligence has sought details on the transfer of funds to New York, foreign travels, and any Pakistani connections related to the case.
Sources indicate that Asif Merchant had asked for $5,000 from his uncle in Karachi to be given to a hitman in the US.
He has reportedly made at least 15 trips to Iran, Iraq, and Yemen between 2015 and 2024, and previously visited the US in 2013 and 2017.
Authorities have obtained details of four Pakistani mobile numbers and one international number used by Asif Merchant, as well as records of three vehicles and a motorcycle registered under his name in Karachi. Investigations are ongoing.
Local authorities have also launched their own inquiry into Asif Merchant’s activities.
It is noteworthy that no criminal record has been found in Karachi, and there is no evidence of his involvement in any crime within Pakistan. Other investigative agencies are also gathering information on this case.
