Pakistan voices support for Bangladesh and calls for stability

Pakistan has shown solidarity with Bangladesh amid the political upheaval following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.

In a press release, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, “The Government and people of Pakistan stand in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh, earnestly wishing for a peaceful and swift return to normalcy.”

The statement expressed Pakistan’s support for the Bangladeshi people, hoping for a quick restoration of stability. “We believe that the resilience and unity of the Bangladeshi people will guide them towards a harmonious future,” the release continued.

The relationship between Pakistan and Bangladesh has faced challenges over the years, especially during Sheikh Hasina’s leadership. Her government’s execution of opposition leaders exacerbated tensions and affected regional cooperation within the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). Bangladesh, in alignment with India, boycotted the SAARC summit in 2016, which has since remained unheld.

With recent political shifts in Bangladesh, there is speculation about potential changes in diplomatic relations. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the chief adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government following a violent student-led uprising that led to Hasina’s removal. The protests, driven by discontent over public sector job quotas, resulted in significant unrest with about 300 deaths and thousands injured.

Pakistan has expressed confidence in Bangladesh’s ability to navigate its current challenges, stating, “We are confident that the resilient spirit and unity of the Bangladeshi people will lead them towards a harmonious future.”

These recent developments may pave the way for improved relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh, potentially fostering enhanced regional cooperation and stability.
