US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Tuesday that the US has urged both Iran and Israel to avoid escalating the conflict in the Middle East. During a joint press conference with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles in Annapolis, Maryland, Blinken emphasized the importance of de-escalation.
Blinken reiterated the US’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s security and vowed continued support for Israel and its troops. He warned that further attacks could exacerbate the conflict and lead to unpredictable and uncontrollable outcomes.
Blinken highlighted the critical stage of cease-fire negotiations in Gaza, noting recent discussions with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad al Thani and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sissi. He stressed that Hamas political chief Yahya Sinwar remains pivotal in deciding whether to finalize the cease-fire agreement, urging him to accept the deal.
Blinken also spoke with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi about de-escalating regional tensions and achieving an immediate Gaza cease-fire, which would include an exchange of hostages and prisoners. He praised Jordan for its humanitarian aid and efforts in promoting regional peace.
Tensions in the Middle East have intensified following the assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut. Hamas and Iran have accused Israel of Haniyeh’s assassination, while Israel has not confirmed its involvement. Iran has promised retaliation, and Hezbollah is expected to respond to Shukr’s killing.
The conflict has further escalated amidst an ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza, which has resulted in significant casualties following Hamas’s October 7 attack last year.
