FO seeks additional details on US allegations against Pakistani man involved in assassination plot

The Foreign Office spokesperson has confirmed that Islamabad is in contact with Washington and is awaiting more information following reports of a Pakistani national’s alleged involvement in a thwarted assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump.

FO spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch stated, “We have seen the media reports and are in communication with US authorities, awaiting further details.” She added that they are aware of the ongoing investigation as noted by US officials.

“Before issuing any formal response, we need to verify the background of the individual involved,” she said.

On Tuesday, the US Justice Department announced charges against a Pakistani man with alleged ties to Iran, related to a foiled plot to assassinate a US politician or government officials. The criminal complaint reveals that Asif Merchant, 46, attempted to recruit individuals in the US to carry out the plot in retaliation for the US killing of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards’ top commander Qassem Soleimani in 2020.
