Parliament honors martyred Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh

The National Assembly unanimously passed a resolution condemning ongoing Israeli brutality in Gaza, urging the global community to take action against Israel’s oppression of Palestinians. The resolution, moved by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, called for the UN Security Council to enforce a ceasefire in Gaza to halt the “genocidal war” against Palestinians.

The resolution highlighted the assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, describing it as a deliberate conspiracy to derail peace efforts in the region. It noted that Israel’s atrocities have resulted in over 40,000 deaths, including women and children, over the past nine months.

Expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people, the resolution declared a national day of mourning and called for funeral prayers for Haniyeh across Pakistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other high-level officials participated in the funeral prayer at the Parliament House.

The National Assembly urged the UNSC to hold Israel accountable for its “war crimes and crimes against humanity,” and called for the immediate recognition of Palestine as a full UN member. The resolution also emphasized providing humanitarian aid and medical assistance to Palestinians, including offering medical education to Palestinian students in Pakistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned Haniyeh’s assassination and warned that unchecked violence by Israel could lead to widespread anger and jeopardize global peace. The assembly collectively paid tribute to the sacrifices of Palestinians and called for the international community, particularly Muslim countries, to address Israel’s human rights violations in Palestine.
