Over the past 16 months, Pakistan has reported 2,075 terrorism incidents that resulted in 1,215 fatalities and 2,600 injuries, according to data from the Ministry of Interior.
The Ministry presented these figures to the National Assembly, revealing that in 2023 alone, terrorist attacks caused 930 deaths and injured 2,000 individuals.
In the first four months of the current year, 285 people were killed, and 600 were injured.
The data highlights a troubling rise in violence across several provinces. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) was the most affected, with 1,140 incidents leading to 756 deaths and 1,786 injuries. Balochistan reported 626 incidents, resulting in 423 fatalities and 734 injuries.
Sindh experienced 19 attacks, with 14 deaths and 36 injuries over the 16-month period. Punjab saw eight incidents, causing 12 deaths and 11 injuries. Gilgit-Baltistan reported three attacks, resulting in nine deaths and 26 injuries.
The Ministry attributed the surge in terrorist activities to various factors, including increased cross-border support for terrorist groups and the strategic use of cyberspace to broaden their reach. The withdrawal of coalition forces from Afghanistan is also seen as a significant factor contributing to the rise in violence.
In response to the growing threat, security forces conducted 2,208 intelligence-based operations in the first quarter of this year, leading to the elimination of 89 terrorists and the arrest of 328 individuals.
Additionally, a draft National Policy for Countering Violence and Extremism has been prepared and is awaiting cabinet approval, reflecting a proactive approach to addressing the escalating terrorism threat.
