Netflix fans received mixed news today, with initial excitement about the announcement of the second series of Squid Game tempered by the revelation of the show’s impending conclusion.
The US streaming giant revealed that the highly anticipated second season of Squid Game, the hit drama that captivated audiences in 2021, will be released later this year. However, it was also announced that a “final season” is planned for next year, signaling that the broadcaster will wrap up its most popular show after its 2025 season.
One fan expressed disappointment, saying, “‘Final season’? This show is too damn good to end after just three seasons.” Another added, “Isn’t it strange that they’re only making three seasons of their most-watched show ever?”
Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game features financially desperate contestants trapped in a deadly competition for a substantial cash prize. It is Netflix’s most-watched series, surpassing Stranger Things and Wednesday, and reached the top spot in 94 countries, including the UK, upon its debut.
A new trailer for the upcoming season was released today, showing athletes on an Olympic-style track, who are then replaced by competitors in the show’s signature green tracksuits, falling as they are eliminated.
The official description for the new season reveals: “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 is determined to uncover the masterminds behind the game and put an end to their brutal sport.”
