Turkiye restricts access to Instagram without providing explanation

Turkiye has blocked access to Instagram, including its mobile app, according to the country’s infotech regulator. The reason for the restriction and its duration were not disclosed. This action follows criticism from Turkish communications official Fahrettin Altun, who accused Instagram of censorship for blocking condolence posts related to the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, a prominent figure in the Palestinian group Hamas. Instagram’s parent company, Meta Platforms Inc, has not yet commented on the ban or Altun’s statements. The Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) announced the decision on its website on August 2.
