A large crowd of far-right, anti-Muslim protesters clashed with police in Southport, northwest England, following a vigil for victims of a knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed children’s dance and yoga class.
Merseyside Police reported that 22 officers were injured in Tuesday night’s violence, with eight sustaining serious injuries. The unrest started when several hundred protesters, mostly men, targeted a Southport mosque, setting vehicles and wheelie bins on fire and attacking a local shop.
The rioters threw bottles and bricks at the police, who linked them to the English Defence League, known for its violent anti-Islam demonstrations. Off-duty officers and reinforcements from other forces were called in to restore order.
“Tonight, Merseyside Police has faced serious violence in Southport,” said Assistant Chief Constable Alex Goss, praising officers for their courage under sustained attack.
The violence erupted shortly after hundreds gathered in the town center to pay tribute to the victims of the attack, laying flowers and toys. Three girls were killed, and eight children were injured, five critically. Two adults who tried to protect them are also in critical condition.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer vowed to use the “full force of the law” against the rioters, stating, “The people of Southport are reeling after the horror inflicted on them yesterday. They deserve our support and respect. Those who have hijacked the vigil for the victims with violence and thuggery have insulted the community as it grieves.”
Police have arrested a teenager for murder and attempted murder in connection with the stabbings. The suspect is from Cardiff and lives near Southport. Assistant Chief Constable Goss noted that speculation about the suspect’s status has fueled violence and disorder.
