Former army officer court-martialed for inciting sedition within the forces

Lieutenant Colonel Akbar Hussain, a retired Pakistan Army officer, has been convicted and sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment by a Field General Court Martial (FGCM) under the Pakistan Army Act of 1952 for inciting sedition among army personnel. The sentence was announced on May 10, 2024, and Hussain’s rank was forfeited on July 26, 2024, according to a press release from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued on Tuesday.

Previously, retired Major Adil Farooq Raja and retired Captain Haider Raza Mehdi were also convicted and sentenced by the FGCM under the same act. Both were charged with inciting sedition among army personnel and violating the Official Secrets Act of 1923 related to espionage and acts detrimental to state safety. Raja and Mehdi were sentenced to 14 and 12 years of rigorous imprisonment, respectively, with their ranks forfeited, effective from November 21, 2023. Their convictions were finalized on October 7 and 9, 2023.
