Intermittent showers cause disruptions in Karachi

Although Karachi was heavily overcast on Wednesday, most areas experienced intermittent light to moderate showers, impacting daily life in the city.

At least two people died from electrocution in the New Karachi and Jamshed Quarters areas.

Rainwater accumulated in several parts of the city, causing traffic jams on various roads during the evening rush hours.

Power supply in some areas was disrupted until late at night due to localized faults.

According to data from the Meteorological Department, Gadap Town received the heaviest rainfall at 42.4mm, followed by Orangi Town with 29.4mm, Surjani Town with 24.1mm, North Karachi with 24mm, Nazimabad with 14.6mm, Bin Qasim with 12.5mm, Gulshan-i-Maymar with 12.2mm, PAF Masroor Base with 10mm, Keamari with 6.5mm, Korangi with 6.4mm, Jinnah Terminal with 5.6mm, PAF Faisal Base with 6mm, Met Complex (University Road) with 5.1mm, and DHA Phase II with 1.2mm.

“This spell is in its final stages and is expected to conclude by Wednesday afternoon in Karachi. Some areas might still see light rain,” said Chief Meteorologist Dr. Sardar Sarfaraz.

He added that the next spell in Karachi will begin on the evening/night of August 5 and last for three to four days.

“The monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal will enter from eastern Sindh and gradually spread to most parts of the province. As of now, this system is expected to bring much heavier showers than those experienced this year,” he said.

The department’s advisory indicates that Wednesday will remain largely cloudy and humid, with some areas seeing light rain or drizzle. The maximum temperature is expected to range between 33-35 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperature recorded on Tuesday was 34 degrees Celsius, with relative humidity at 5 pm recorded at 82 percent.
