Erdogan annouces that Turkiye might intervene in Israel to help Palestinians

President Tayyip Erdogan stated on Sunday that Turkiye might intervene in Israel similarly to how it did in Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh, though he did not specify the nature of the intervention.

Erdogan, a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza, brought up the conflict during a speech highlighting Turkiye’s defense industry.

“We must be very strong so that Israel cannot continue these actions against Palestine. Just as we intervened in Karabakh and Libya, we might take similar actions there,” Erdogan said at a meeting of his ruling AK Party in his hometown of Rize.

“There is no reason why we cannot do this. We must be strong to take such steps,” Erdogan added in the televised address.

AK Party representatives did not respond to requests for more details on Erdogan’s comments. Israel did not immediately comment.

Erdogan seemed to be referring to past Turkish actions. In 2020, Turkiye deployed military personnel to Libya to support the United Nations-recognized Government of National Accord. Libyan Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah, who leads the Government of National Unity in Tripoli, is supported by Turkiye.
